The best CB radio mic for most trucks is the Astatic 636L, and the best for the money is the Ranger SRA-198 two-pack. If your radio is a Uniden, the Uniden BC804NC is the safer fit, and if you just want your Uniden PRO series radio back the way it shipped, buy the BC645 factory replacement.
The mic matters more on CB than people expect. AM CB carries your voice in the signal's strength, so cab noise, a weak element or a worn cord all go out over the air. A new mic is often the cheapest audio upgrade a CB radio can get.

How we picked
We pulled Amazon's results for "cb radio mic" on October 15, 2026, with each listing's sales and ratings. The Astatic 636LB1 and the Gear Keeper mic keeper both showed 900+ bought in the past month. Below them sat the Astatic 636LSE, Cobra HG M73 and RoadKing RK56B at 200+. Then we read each listing's compatibility list, because fit is where CB mics fail, and checked the CB rules in 47 CFR Part 95 Subpart D.
"How we pick" means listings and FCC rules, compared side by side, plus what CB forums report about fit. We didn't key these mics ourselves. How we research.
Will it fit your radio? The 4-pin problem
A 4-pin CB mic carries four jobs on four wires: mic audio, ground or shield, a transmit switch line and a receive switch line. The plug looks the same across brands. What differs is which pin carries which job. In a WorldwideDX thread on Cobra wiring, two members list the Cobra 4-pin layout as shield on pin 1, audio on 2, transmit on 3 and receive on 4. In a Midland thread, another member lists audio on 1, shield on 2, receive on 3 and transmit on 4 ("Most 4 pin midlands are wired this way"), and a second warns that "Midland has 2 different 4 pin wirings depending what radio you have." That's why a forum regular warns that "1 mic would work well on 1 radio where the same mic may not work so well on another."
In practice, the mic makers solve it for you by listing the radios each mic is wired for. Here's what the listings we read say:
| Mic | Listing says it fits |
|---|---|
| Uniden BC804NC | Uniden PC68 and PC78 series; Cobra 18, 25 and 29; Connex, General, Galaxy and Stryker 10-meter radios |
| Uniden BC645 | Uniden PRO505XL, PRO510XL, PRO520XL, PRO538XL; Cobra 19DXIV; any radio wired 4-pin Cobra/Uniden |
| Ranger SRA-198 | 4-pin RCI, Cobra, Connex, Galaxy, Stryker, Magnum |
| Cobra HG M75, M77 | Most 4-pin Cobra CB radios, "not limited to Cobra models" |
| Astatic 636L family | CB, amateur and SSB radios with a standard 4-pin mic connection |
Two checks save a return. First, count the pins on your radio's jack: some Uniden and newer radios use 6-pin or modular jacks, and a 4-pin mic won't plug in. Second, if your radio is a Midland, look for that brand by name on the mic's list. If it isn't there, buy that brand's own replacement.
The best CB radio mics
Astatic 636LB1 (302-636L)
The 636L is the mic you see clipped to the dash in half the trucks at any stop, and Amazon's numbers agree: 900+ bought last month and 3,194 ratings at 4.7 stars. The element is a low-impedance dynamic built for close talking, so it picks up your voice at an inch or two and rejects the diesel and road noise further away. The steel grille is polyurethane coated, which helps a mic that gets dropped on the floor every week.
Same mic, different looks: the 636LSE anniversary edition in silver with a chrome-covered cord, and the 636L in carbon fiber with a 7.5 foot coil cord and a soft lip guard.
- Elementlow-impedance dynamic, noise canceling
- Connector4-pin
- Cordcoiled
- Grillepolyurethane-coated steel
- ForCB, amateur and SSB radios
- Weight9.9 oz
Why it stands out
- Noise canceling for loud cabs
- Rugged housing and grille
- Huge rating base
Think twice if
- Your radio is a Midland or 6-pin model (check the wiring first)
Ranger SRA-198 (2-pack)
Two noise-canceling mics in one listing, so you can fit the truck and the base, or keep a spare in the glovebox for the day a cord breaks. The listing's fit list is the broadest of any mic here, naming six brands of 4-pin radio, Cobra and Galaxy among them. On WorldwideDX, Big Kahuna named Ranger's SRA-158 the best non-amplified CB hand mic, though another poster added that it doesn't sound good on every radio.
- Elementnoise canceling
- Connector4-pin
- Fits (listing)RCI, Cobra, Connex, Galaxy, Stryker, Magnum
- Pack2 mics
Why it stands out
- Two mics per order
- Broad 4-pin fit list
Think twice if
- You want detailed specs (the listing is thin)
Uniden BC804NC
The BC804NC has the most detailed listing of any CB mic we read, and the detail is useful. It gives the impedance (500 ohms), the frequency response (100 to 5,000 Hz, about right for speech) and a 9 foot cord with strain relief at both ends. The cord end is where most mics fail. Its fit list names Uniden's PC68 and PC78, the Cobra 29 and its siblings, and 10-meter radios such as the Galaxy and Stryker lines.
- Elementdynamic, noise canceling
- Impedance500 ohm
- Response100-5,000 Hz
- Patternomnidirectional
- Cord9 ft coiled, strain relief both ends
- Connector4-pin locking ring
Why it stands out
- Clear fit list
- Long cord with strain relief
- Published electrical specs
Think twice if
- You want a directional pattern (it's listed as omnidirectional)
Uniden BC645
If your Uniden PRO series mic has quit, this is the one it shipped with. Uniden's listing says it's the factory mic for the PRO505XL and works with any radio wired 4-pin Cobra/Uniden, naming the PRO520XL from our best CB radio guide among them. It uses an electret condenser element, so it sounds like the stock mic, for better or worse.
- Elementelectret condenser
- Connector4-pin
- Cord8 ft coiled
- Factory mic forUniden PRO505XL
- Fits (listing)PRO505XL, PRO510XL, PRO520XL, PRO538XL, Cobra 19DXIV
Why it stands out
- Exact replacement for Uniden PRO radios
- 8 foot cord
Think twice if
- You want noise canceling (it isn't listed as noise canceling)
RoadKing RK56B
The RK56 shape is the other trucker classic, and on WorldwideDX it gets recommended for mobile use on a radio that suits it. This black RK56B has 1,364 ratings, though the listing itself says little beyond "4-pin dynamic noise canceling." If you want chrome, there's a RoadKing RK56CHSS with a chrome flex cord.
- Elementdynamic, noise canceling
- Connector4-pin
- Colorblack
Why it stands out
- Proven trucker shape
- Noise canceling dynamic element
Think twice if
- You want a published fit list (the listing doesn't give one)
Cobra HG M75 power mic
A power mic amplifies your voice before it reaches the radio, which helps soft talkers and older radios with weak mic gain. Cobra's listing pitches the M75 at people who "speak softly or have a weaker signal." The catch is in the rules: AM CB modulation must stay between 85 and 100 percent, and radios over 2.5 W must have a limiter that stops it going past 100 (95.975). Turn a power mic up too far and you get distortion and splatter, not more range. Start low and ask for a radio check.
If you'd rather have noise canceling than gain, the Cobra HG M77 is the same body with a noise-canceling element.
- Typepowered (amplified)
- Connector4-pin
- Cord9 ft coiled
- PTTleft side
- Fits (listing)most 4-pin Cobra radios, not limited to Cobra
Why it stands out
- Boosts weak or soft-spoken audio
- Long cord, left-side PTT
Think twice if
- Your radio already modulates fully (you'll just add distortion)

Gear Keeper CB mic keeper RT4-4112
The most-bought CB mic accessory on Amazon, with 900+ last month and 6,164 ratings. Instead of fumbling the mic back onto a clip, you let go and the tether pulls it back toward the headliner. The listing gives 28 inches of reach and a 9 ounce pull, enough to hold the mic without dragging on your hand. It mounts to an existing screw with the included D-ring.
Prefer a hanger? The Magnetic Mic replaces the mic's metal clip with a magnetic base and has 2,594 ratings, and the RoadPro RPHH-2 is a plain metal hanger with a hook you can bend to fit.
- Typeretractable tether
- Extension28 in
- Retraction force9 oz
- MountingD-ring for a headliner, visor or radio-mount screw, plus adjustable lanyard
Why it stands out
- No more hunting for the clip
- Installs on an existing screw
Think twice if
- Your cab has no screw near the headliner or visor

What the FCC rules say about mics
CB is licensed by rule, so no application is needed (95.305). The radio is what the rules regulate: 4 watts carrier on AM and FM, 12 watts peak on SSB (95.967), 8 kHz bandwidth on AM (95.973), and the modulation limits above. A mic swap doesn't touch any of that, but internal "peaking and tuning" does: only the grantee may modify a certified transmitter (95.335(c)).
Two mic features run into the content rules. CB operators may not transmit "sound effects or any other audio material to amuse or entertain," or "any sound effects solely to attract attention" (95.933(f) and (g)). That's a poor fit for echo mics and novelty roger beeps, so we left echo mics out of this guide.
After you plug it in
Ask for a radio check on channel 19 or your local channel and listen to what comes back. If people say you're distorted, back the mic gain off, and if they say you're quiet, bring it up before you blame the mic. A bad antenna match can make a good mic sound weak, so if a new mic doesn't help, check SWR with our CB antenna tuning guide and the truck CB antenna picks.
New to CB talk? The radio lingo and 10-codes guide covers what to say, and the CB channel chart lists all 40 channels. Running a trail group? Our GMRS vs CB comparison explains why many clubs now carry both.
If you only buy one: an Astatic 636L and a Gear Keeper. That fixes the sound and the clip in one order.
