The best CB radios for trucks, Jeeps and semis

Every legal CB puts out the same 4 watts, so the right pick comes down to your cab, your voltage and your antenna. These are the radios worth mounting, and how to install one.

How we pick · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

For most trucks, buy the Cobra 29 LTD Classic: the trucker standard, with an SWR meter, instant channel 9 and AM/FM. Get the Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB if you want sideband for more reach, the Uniden PRO520XL when dash space is tight, and a 12/24-volt radio like the President Johnny III for a semi.

All legal CBs transmit the same 4 watts on AM, so the antenna you pair with the radio matters more than the radio itself.

How we picked

We checked the Amazon results for "cb radio" and "cb radio handheld" on October 13, 2026, and pulled each contender's listing. The Cobra 29 LTD Classic led sales at 1,000+ last month, and the Midland 75-822 and Uniden Bearcat 980 had the deepest rating histories, at 4,700+ and 3,100+.

Every pick is a 40-channel CB that its maker sells for US CB use. We left out "export" 10-meter radios and 80-watt "CB" radios, because operating them on CB channels breaks the FCC rules (95.935, 95.967). Then we sorted by what differs between legal radios: SSB, FM, SWR metering, size, 24-volt support and weather channels.

"How we pick" means a spec and listing review against the FCC rules, not a road test. How we research.

AM, FM and SSB: what the FCC allows

CB has 40 channels from 26.965 to 27.405 MHz (95.963). The full list is in our CB channel and frequency chart. On those channels a CB may use three kinds of voice:

ModeLegal powerWho uses itThe catch
AM4 W carrierAlmost everyone: truckers on 19, off-road clubs, channel 9Picks up engine and static noise
FM4 W carrierA small but growing group since 2021AM radios can't properly hear it, and the other way around
SSB (USB/LSB)12 W peak envelope powerLong-distance talkers, often on channels 36-40Needs an SSB radio on both ends; same 40 channels, not 80 more

Power from 95.967; emission types, including FM, from 95.971 as amended in 2021. The SSB channel habit is a custom, not a rule.

So an "AM/FM" label is useful only if your group agrees to use FM. SSB is the real step up for distance, and it costs more.

The 8 best CB radios for trucks

Best overall for trucks

Cobra 29 LTD Classic

Cobra says the 29 has been its professional CB design for over 50 years, and it still outsells everything else here: 1,000+ last month. The built-in SWR calibration lets you check the antenna without a separate meter, and a light warns you when SWR needs another look, say after a low branch. You also get RF gain to cut background noise and a 9-foot mic cord that reaches across a big cab.

Best SSB for distance

Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB

Sideband is what this radio is for. SSB runs up to 12 watts PEP and packs the signal into a narrower slice, which carries farther through noise than AM. The Bearcat 980 adds NOAA weather, an integrated SWR meter and a noise-canceling mic, and it has 3,100+ ratings. Remember that the person you're talking to also needs SSB.

Uniden PRO520XL

A compact, no-frills CB that's been a work-truck staple for years, with 2,800+ ratings. It has the controls that matter (RF gain, noise limiter, squelch, instant channel 9) and a PA function if you add a speaker. It fits places a Cobra 29 won't.

Cobra 75 All Road

All the controls live in the handset, and the radio box mounts out of sight. The handset is IP66 against water and dust, which matters in a doorless Jeep or a side-by-side. Bluetooth links a wireless headset or Cobra's optional PTT button, and digital noise cancellation helps over engine noise.

Cobra 19 MINI

Best for 24-volt semis

President Johnny III USA

Many semis and heavy trucks run 24-volt systems, and a 12-volt radio there needs a converter. This one is listed for 12 or 24 volts. The Amazon listing is thin on detail (one bullet, about the warranty), so check President's manual for features before you buy.

Best handheld that converts to mobile

Midland 75-822

A handheld that becomes a mobile. Run it on six AAs, or plug in the included lighter adapter. Add Midland's mobile accessories (sold separately) and it works from a mount with an outside antenna. That's how to get real range from it. With 4,700+ ratings it's the most-reviewed CB in this guide.

Best handheld

Cobra HH50WXST

Cobra's handheld for the glovebox or a jobsite, with NOAA weather, dual watch for two channels and a lit display. It sold 500+ last month. A handheld CB's short antenna is the limit, so plan on it for talking to trucks nearby, not across a county.

Installing a CB in a truck

  1. Mount the radio where you can reach the mic and see the channel without looking away from the road: under the dash, on a console bracket or overhead in a semi.
  2. Wire the power properly. A lighter plug works for a handheld or a quick test. For a permanent install, run fused leads toward the battery (the Cobra 19 MINI includes a 48-inch hardwire kit). Fewer connections mean less alternator whine.
  3. Place the antenna high and clear. A CB antenna works best with metal under it and the top above the cab. Bed rails and mirror brackets are the usual compromises. Our CB antenna guide for trucks covers mounts and coax.
  4. Tune the SWR before you talk for real. Check channel 1 and channel 40 and trim the antenna until the readings are low and close together. A meter like the SURECOM SW-111 covers 26.965-27.405 MHz, and its listing notes that a 2:1 SWR loses about 11% of your power. The step-by-step is in how to tune a CB antenna.
  5. Set squelch and RF gain at a truck stop or in traffic, where the noise is real, not in your driveway.

The CB rules that actually come up

  • No license: CB is licensed by rule, so you can transmit as soon as it's installed (95.305).
  • Channel 9 is for emergencies and traveler assistance only, by rule (95.931). Channel 19 is the trucker channel by habit.
  • Keep conversations to five minutes, then wait a minute before transmitting again on that channel; emergencies and traveler help are exempt (95.957).
  • No contacts with stations in other countries, except Canada's General Radio Service (95.933). No music or sound effects either.
  • No linear amplifiers, under any circumstances (95.939), and no 10-meter amateur radios on CB channels (95.935).

The shorthand you'll hear on 19 is covered in radio lingo and 10-codes.

CB or GMRS?

CB is free and it's what truckers and many off-road clubs monitor. GMRS needs a $35 license but gives clearer FM audio and repeaters, with antennas a fraction of the size. Plenty of trail rigs carry both. Our GMRS vs CB for off-roading comparison goes through it channel by channel.

If you only buy one

Get the Cobra 29 LTD Classic and spend what you saved over the fancy radios on a good fiberglass antenna and a proper mount. That pairing outperforms an expensive radio on a magnet-mount stub every time. Step up to the Uniden Bearcat 980 only if you'll talk sideband.

Questions people ask

What is the best CB radio for a truck?
The Cobra 29 LTD Classic for most pickups and long-haul cabs, because it has an SWR meter, instant channel 9 and AM/FM. Choose the Uniden Bearcat 980 if you want single sideband, or the Uniden PRO520XL if dash space is tight. On a 24-volt truck, pick a radio rated for 12/24 V.
Do you need a license for a CB radio?
No. CB is licensed by rule, so anyone may operate a certified CB radio without applying to the FCC (47 CFR 95.305). You still have to follow the Part 95 rules, including the 4-watt AM limit and the channel 9 restriction.
What channel do truckers use on CB?
Channel 19 (27.185 MHz) is the common highway channel across most of the US. That's a custom, not a rule. Channel 9 is different: by FCC rule it may be used only for emergencies and traveler assistance.
How far will a CB radio reach from a truck?
With a good, tuned antenna, a few miles to the low teens truck to truck on AM is typical, depending on terrain and traffic noise. SSB usually reaches farther. A handheld with its stock antenna often manages a mile or two. Long skip contacts happen when the ionosphere cooperates, which you can't plan on.
Is SSB worth it on a CB?
If you talk to other SSB users on open roads or at night, yes: 12 watts PEP and a narrower signal get through noise better than 4-watt AM. If your group or convoy uses AM channel 19 or 4, an SSB radio still does AM, so it's a costlier radio you may not use to its limit.
Can I use FM on a CB radio?
Yes, since the FCC allowed FM on the 40 CB channels in 2021, and newer radios like the Cobra 29 LTD have it. But an AM radio can't properly hear an FM signal, and most highway traffic is still AM, so use FM only when everyone in your group has agreed to it.
